About Maisha Concept
Founded in 2012, Maisha Concept is an African inspired fashion and lifestyle brand aimed at the globally conscious consumer. The label is the brainchild of designer and entrepreneur Rakhee Shah. Maisha means “giving life” in Swahili, and through Maisha’s contemporary designs, Rakhee aims to resurrect the culture, heritage and skill of local artisans and textile manufacturers across Africa.
Maisha is best known for its rich, vibrant fabrics which have been physically sourced from various corners of Africa. Rakhee works with small, independent artisans in a bid to support the traditions of local communities and preserve ancestral knowledge. Each piece from the collection is one-of a-kind, with its own story and symbolism, created with care, devotion and an eye for detail. Rakhee ensures that her design and creative vision is consistently realized in the final product that reaches her customers.
Maisha aims to bring vibrance and a unique flare back into your wardrobe. The brand’s identity has been steered by a global understanding, and aims to inspire the curious spirit within us. The label is growing fast organically through private trunk shows, fashion events and bespoke services, as well as now being stocked in selective stores and online fashion websites globally.
About the Designer
The inspiration behind the brand is Rakhee’s heritage and her life’s many adventures. Rakhee is third generation Kenyan by birth and of Indian origin, and her interest in fabrics started at a very young age. Born and raised in Nairobi, Rakhee was particularly close to her father, who manufactured and distributed a variety of textiles. Being constantly surrounded by the rich colours, prints and fabrics, from an early age Rakhee was designing and stitching pieces for self-use.
Over the years, Rakhee has been be able to travel the world, meeting diverse people, embracing different cultures, and gaining exposure to a variety of local art and fashion. Seeing the world this way through curious eyes sparked her desire to link her African heritage and contemporary design credentials to create something truly unique.
